Amy Marcy Beach (1867 - 1944) was a pioneering woman composer at a time when women were barely considered by music publishers. She has been acclaimed to be the first important American woman composer. As a child Amy was allowed rather than encouraged to further her obvious musical talent. She wrote in a mature and virtuosic style for piano with use of chromaticism, fine melodic lines, and Impressionistic styles.

It is those elements of Impressionism, using musical styles of Ravel and Debussy, that make "From Grandmother's Garden" so interesting to the performer and audience. "Grandmother's Garden" includes this short piece describing or at least alluding to a garden plant you might find in a Victorian garden: Mignonette.

Not too difficult to play, but it is always interesting and gratifying to play. This piece, along with two others from the set "From Grandmother's Garden" was transcribed for flute quartet by John Gibson of JB Linear Music. The flute quartet sheet music includes score and parts (3 C flutes, 1 Alto flute with an alternate 4th C flute part)

Reviewed April, 2011 in Flute Talk Magazine: Mignonette by Amy Marcy Beach, arranged for flute quartet by John Gibson, is the third movement from "Grandmother's Garden" for solo piano and refers to a fragrant tropical plant.  This lighthearted fast menuet in 3/4 time alternates between C and Ab major, contains a fair amount of chromaticism, and has simple rhythms.  Well-edited, it is scored for three C flutes and alto, or four C flutes. -Diane Boyd Schultz, University of Alabama.
