Schubert based his Quartet in D minor on the theme of the second movement, a set of variations based on Schubert's song, Death and the Maiden. There is a sustained unity throughout the entire four movement piece with a variety of themes and skillful development. This is the first movement of the four. Each is sold separately and it can also be purchased as a whole.
