The Pastoral Symphony in Handel’s Messiah is a brief instrumental interlude that precedes the Christmas portion of the oratorio. In this transcription, the meter has been changed from 12/8 to ¾ time in order to simplify reading for less experienced musicians. The piece could be played as a trio if necessary, using the cue notes provided in the second and alto parts. For most of the piece, those instruments double each other at the octave. If there are more than 2 players for the top two parts, the 1st part should be doubled to compensate for the 2nd and alto being largely the same.
Apologies to the bass player, whose part is basically a drone and not terribly interesting to play. However, it is the glue that holds together the other parts, and provides motion through the transitions from one section to the next.
The flute choir arrangement and the clarinet choir arrangement are in the same concert key (C major) so that interchangeable combinations of instruments may play this piece together.
This clarinet quartet sheet music includes score and parts. It is set for 2 Bb clarinets, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet with an alternate Bb part for the alto. The arrangement was done by Claudia Bissett.
