J. S. Bach's suites for unaccompanied violin and cello are mainstays of music literature. Bach's ability to insert so much beauty, depth and variety in a single line of music makes these works masterpieces of the art of unaccompanied solo music. This new set of unaccompanied pieces has as its goal the expansion of unaccompanied solo music by Bach plus others that are “Bach-ish” in character. Both Mendelssohn and Villa-Lobos were strongly affected by Bach’s work. Matt Doran’s Motive and Five Variations (2006) brings the concept squarely into the 21st century.
